Golden Dawn and Greece- can we still tell truth from lies?

Is the Greek public truly interested in understanding the waves of extremism?

One month has passed

Within this period, the leader and the deputy leader of the Nazi organization Golden Dawn have been arrested. Along with them, other Golden Dawn members and the police officers who had infiltrated into the organization, have gone through at the police departments.

The Greek media celebrated these events. Many journalists who had previously promoted the Nazi organization accuse it and emphasize its past. Curiously, a part of the Greek people already knew the history and the case of the Golden Dawn. This makes Greek journalists look more ridiculous when they pose as surprised by the criminal nature of the organization. The truth is that most of the Greek population was unaware and indifferent to the reality that triggered the current situation. They were actually surprised.

On the day when the Greek police arrested the members of the Golden Dawn, I had what we call an epiphany. The images that I saw on the TV reminded me of the old times. It was one of the moments when I felt that the story circling, and if the people are not familiar with their past, then they will surely suffer because of the same mistakes. In those days the people rejoiced because they saw the criminals behind the bars of the prison. But I do not trust the Greek justice, especially when I realized that many Nazis have infiltrated into several state departments.

A few days later my fears were confirmed. Several members of the Golden Dawn were released on bail. Even from the first moments they revealed their intentions. Elias Kasidiaris kicked and pushed reporters and photographers outside the courts. Elias Panagiotaros and Nikos Michos threatened journalists outside the Attica Police Headquarters!  Such events are outrageous, they occur outside the courts and police stations and none of the officers had any reaction.

The Golden Dawn and the Greek people

On the other hand, we have the Greek people. Many journalists and politicians celebrated the idea that the ‘popularity’ ratings of the Golden Dawn will fall. But 8-9% of the Greek population continues to support the Nazis. This percentage no longer has the excuse that they did not know what the actual picture of the Golden Dawn was. Plus, they are familiar with the Nazi ideology of the organization, its criminal nature and its evil past. We can say with confidence that in Greece, Nazism is around 8-9%. Of course, there is the arrogant nature of Greece that does not want to admit this mistake. So the proportion is very likely to be lower.

In the meanwhile, some newspapers offer, every Sunday, various publications and books, seeking to awaken the Greeks. For example, Kathimerini offers historical books like Mark Mazower and Neil Ferguson, and movies such as the German masterpiece, “The Wave”. The point is how the public is interested in learning the truth.

…and the Greek government

Finally, there is the Greek government, which tries to gain glory by hiding the new soulless economic measures that will be put in place in the forthcoming months. A ministerial decision stopped the investigation list Lagarde ( this list contained all the Greek wealthy tax evaders); while overnight, there was an agreement between the state and the private channels, in terms of broadcasting license of their signal. The Greek prime minister visited the country as victorious against the Greek Neo-Nazi (big lie) preparing a new attack on the left. His attitude is quite dangerous because throwing unfounded accusations towards the left-wing; he enhances the polarization of voters.

In my opinion, in Greece, we are living historical days.
We wake up in the morning and we do not know what has happened throughout the night while we slept. New developments are monitored every day on TV. We live in a time when we ought to know more, to study and to be conscious about our choices and our actions.
The ignorance and the indifference of people is the best weapon for the neo-Nazism.
